AN INTERVIEW WITH INDIA'S FIRST CLINICAL MUSICAL THERAPIST
CASE STUDIES
From Silence to Song
A lovely little boy, diagnosed with Autism hardly ever spoke a word, speech being his problem area. For three years, he would lie down and refuse to be part of the sessions. Different methods of engaging experiments were tried, but to no avail. The child’s mother refused to stop the sessions as they calmed him and he appeared to be tantrum-prone on the days of no music.
With her persuasion, we continued and one fine day, the magic of music was dramatically revealed. He proceeded straight up to the instrument and started creating abstract music like he was born with the talent. Gradually he was integrated into regular music classes, another miracle of music.
Too Special to be Treated Normal
Another undiscovered little genius has been labelled an Asperger’s patient, apparently too special to be granted admission to normal schools. His hidden musical genius was revealed to us through our classes. To our astonishment he wrote out stories and songs worth note.
I see not a transformation through music but an acceptance and understanding that made him comfortable enough to explore his hidden talent.
Singing with her whole being
Another little angelic child suffered from ADHD, who couldn’t focus unless it was through physical movement. Sitting at one place to study did not agree with her special talent. With interactive music incorporated with dance, I am proud to say that we discovered her nightingale like singing voice.
Shy to Shine
A sweet little shy child had no neurological condition. Her reluctance to mingle was completely behavioural. Thanks to music, she is comfortably confident today with social skills to boot.
Bag of Comfort
A little girl wouldn’t part with her tiny bag. Clutched close to her, it was what stilled her anxiety about being admitted mid-term. Lagging behind in class, she held on to the one familiar security clutch – her bag. She heeded my request to keep it aside, but the fidgeting from her anxiety began.
Respecting her need, we continued with the classes with bag clutched for comfort. Suffice to say, music is all the comfort she needed eventually.
